Questions About Crystalens
New York City, Manhattan, and Long Island, New York
At Kelly Laser Center, we are proud to stay on the cutting edge of technology and offer our patients the latest in eye surgery options. Crystalens® is one such procedure that helps patients reverse the effects of both cataracts (cloudy or fuzzy vision) and presbyopia (blurred close-up vision).
What is Crystalens?
Crystalens is an accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) that is inserted in place of the patient's natural eye lens that has become clouded due to the natural aging process or trauma. What makes Crystalens different from other intraocular lenses is that the artificial lenses have the ability to flex and move as the muscles of the eye contract. This accommodating feature of the lenses allows patients to maintain focus on images; regardless of how near or far they appear.
After Crystalens eye surgery, many patients no longer need eye glasses or contacts to read, drive at night, work on a computer or perform other tasks that were challenging prior to the surgery.
What type of vision can you expect after Crystalens eye surgery?
Every patient's eyes are unique; therefore, every patient will have a different level of success with Crystalens. This procedure is extremely effective in correcting cataracts, and many patients experience 20/20 vision after the surgery.
How long does the Crystalens procedure take?
Under normal circumstances, the Crystalens procedure will take less than 15 minutes to complete in our surgery center. The procedure is not painful and patients go home within 2 hours of the procedure.
How long is the recovery period?
The typical recovery period for Crystalens is a few days when the eyes can be sensitive and the pupil dilated. During this time, patients should be careful to avoid:
Lifting heavy objects
Rubbing the eyes
Strenuous activities
Wearing makeup
Getting soap or other objects in the eyes
Is Crystalens safe?
Yes. Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating IOL and presbyopia correcting IOL for cataract patients. More than 100,000 patients around the world have had Crystalens lenses implanted, and the popularity of this highly effective procedure continues to grow. Patients with Crystalens will not have recurring cataracts, and clinical trials have shown that even after 7 years, patients' vision remains excellent.
