Anatomy of the Eye

Our eyes are highly complex organs that require many individual component parts to help you see the world around you. In many ways, your eyes function like a camera. Light rays pass through the cornea, pupil, and lens, ultimately hitting the retina at the back of your eye. The retina then transforms the light rays into impulses which are sent to your brain via the optic nerve.

Your eye’s focusing power stems from the cornea (70%) and the lens (30%). If there are any abnormalities or irregularities on your cornea or lens, your eye will not focus incoming light properly on the retina, resulting in poor vision. To learn more about how the eye processes visual stimuli, please watch our video on how the eye works.

Common Vision Disorders

As stated earlier, blurred vision is the result of improper focusing of light rays. This is called a refractive error. Some of the most common refractive errors include:

VISION DISORDER

REFRACTIVE DYNAMICS

MYOPIA

This condition is also called nearsightedness. Light focuses in front of the retina. You will be able to see near objects clearly, but objects at a distance will appear blurry.

Manhattan Lasik Surgeon

HYPEROPIA

This condition is also called farsightedness. Light is not properly focused when it hits the retina, resulting in blurry vision for objects at close range.

Long Island Hyperopia

ASTIGMATISM:

This condition is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, resulting in an unequal bending of light, creating two focal points on the retina. This leads to blurred vision. Astigmatism can also be accompanied by other refractive errors such as myopia or hyperopia.

New York City Astigmatism

PRESBYOPIA:

As we age, the muscle surrounding our eye's lens gets weaker, resulting in a deterioration of vision. This refractive error is most common in people over the age of 45 and requires reading glasses or bifocals to see properly.

New York City Presbyopia

Common Vision Correction Procedures

Some of the most common vision correction procedures include:

LASIK is one of the most common laser vision correction options to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. PRK/Epi-LASIK is an ideal option for people whose corneas are too thin, flat, steep, or irregularly shaped to respond to LASIK. If your myopia is very severe, phakic implants will yield better results than LASIK. Non-phakic implant/clear lens extraction procedures are performed on people with hyperopia or presbyopia that are not suitable candidates for LASIK.
